My Quest to Spend the Quarterly $50 Credit from the Amex Hilton Surpass Card—and a Surprisingly Good Use of It

My Quest to Spend the Quarterly $50 Credit from the Amex Hilton Surpass Card—and a Surprisingly Good Use of It

If you happen to be like me, holding an Amex Hilton Surpass card, you have an additional task on your shoulders every quarter. This task might be pleasant or stressful depending on your needs, but in my case, it’s not always easy to spend the credit without unnecessarily overspending.

The Amex Hilton Surpass Card

The Amex Hilton Surpass card is a great card to hold from the start. As of June 2026, it offers a 130,000 Hilton points welcome bonus. You also get complimentary Hilton Gold status, which offers you free breakfast outside the US and food and beverage credits inside the US. There are also other benefits like a free room night ($15K USD spending required) and National Car Rental Executive Elite status match. All of these are pretty good if you actually stay in Hilton hotels often when you travel.

On top of that, this card gives you a $50 quarterly credit for all spending charged to Hilton hotels and resorts, which easily offsets the $150 annual fee. This is one of the few cards that offers direct cash value instead of perks, like airport lounge access, where you often need to calculate the ROI.

My Three Tries to Spend the Credit

1st Quest

Although I did get my first $50 back in the first quarter of the year when I spent a night at a Hampton Inn, I didn’t have any travel plans for the following quarter. So, I have been trying to spend the $50 credit as efficiently as I can without spending extra money out of pocket.

Staycation hotels were a no-go for me. The World Cup effect has resulted in hotels upcharging two to three times the regular cost, and there is no point in spending just to spend a night in a motel, which would still cost a lot more than the credit is worth.

My intuition was to dine at a hotel restaurant, as most of them normally use the hotel's POS machine. However, this isn't guaranteed if the hotel and restaurant have different owners; in some cases, they just share the same building and nothing else.

My first try was dining at a restaurant located in a Hilton property's lobby. The restaurant wasn’t a franchise, and it offered breakfast services to hotel guests. As promising as it looked, I only learned after dining that the charging merchant was not Hilton. The only way for the meal to be charged by the hotel was to be a registered guest and charge the meal to your room bill.

So my first try failed, and I was back to looking for other options.

Second Quest

A Reddit post inspired me: some people were buying $50 Starbucks gift cards, and Amex would credit the transaction. This works at certain Starbucks locations situated inside hotel lobbies. You can then use the gift card at any other Starbucks location when needed. Nice idea, I thought.

After a quick search on Google Maps, I found that the closest Hilton with an attached Starbucks was almost an hour's drive from me. With the credit expiring soon, my eagerness to crack the code had completely overcome my reasonable ROI evaluation. So, I hopped into my car and hit the road.

I arrived at the Starbucks some time later. It was only accessible from inside the hotel lobby, with no direct door to the outside. This is it, I thought to myself.

However, just to be cautious and not give away another $50 on top of the meal I already had (which was overall worth the price, even without the credit), I decided to order a drink and check the charging merchant before buying a gift card.

Apple Pay worked flawlessly, complete with the branded confirmation ringtone. I asked for the receipt, and the result was immediately disappointing. I didn’t even need to wait for the Amex app to update the transaction; the $3 drink was charged to the franchise restaurant across the parking lot.

I don’t know how legal it is for the owner to share a POS machine like that, but nonetheless, I no longer needed to purchase a gift card.

The image shows a digital receipt from an iPhone, listing transactions including a 33.01 charge at DoubleTree by Hilton and a 2.64 charge at Turtle Jack's Muskoka, both located in Toronto, ON, dated March 24, 2026.

Last Quest

As I was carrying the drink back to my car, I was thinking about how I'd just wasted time trying to spend this credit. There seemed to be no way to recoup the value this quarter unless I actually needed to stay at the hotel. However, as I walked past the little hotel store, an idea came to me.

The property happened to be a DoubleTree, one of my favorite hotel brands to stay at—mostly thanks to their warm cookies (which you can actually ask nicely for more of while staying there).

While most of the beverages and candies at the store were overpriced, and it would feel weird to do my snack shopping at a hotel, I noticed they sold their signature DoubleTree cookies for $20 a box.

I quickly ran some calculations in my head and went to the reception to ask if they were selling any. They were. They also told me that a fresh batch was baking right then if I was willing to wait. With six to seven cookies in a box, I wouldn’t be able to finish them all in one day anyway, so I was perfectly happy with the ones already sitting in their heated oven.

While they boxed up my cookies in the back, the receptionist charged my card and handed me a printed receipt in their usual hotel bill format.

The DoubleTree cookies tasted great—but free ones taste even better.

Conclusion

So, if you happen to be an Amex Hilton Surpass cardholder and don’t know what to do with your quarterly credit, don’t let it slide! I highly recommend grabbing some "free" cookies from your nearby DoubleTree. As someone mentioned on Reddit, “The thing about DoubleTree cookies is it isn't just about the quality; it's that a cookie tastes really good when you are checking in after a long day of travel.”
